My new sensational creative morning routine for a beautiful start to the day

CREATIVITY & WELL BEING ///

I always used to walk early in the morning, somewhere between 5 and 6 am. I was sure this was THE best way to start the day and to get set up and ready for having an intentionally beautiful day. However, as I continue to prioritise motherhood, self-care and creating intentional power focus points throughout my week for my art and business, I realise that this early morning time slot is better spent feeding my creativity.

Whilst walking is still high on the list of my daily priorities, it is easier to slot this in somewhere else during the day because it doesn't require creative power or mental alertness. I realised that the 5-6 am window is a precious chunk of time for me, as I am super creative, alert and mentally calm during this period. The house is also peaceful, with Miss 11 and our pooch curled up in bed most mornings during this time.

As I navigated how I wanted my ideal week to look and what tasks were non-negotiables, I realised that creativity and making art were quickly squeezed in and tagged onto the week rather than being a top priority. Yes, blog posts, emails, strategy, and marketing are essential, but being creative every day is how I stay energised and happy. It's something that fills me up and helps me expand. It has to be the centre of my life. No questions.

So I started thinking about how to move tasks and priorities around to spend more time creating. This was when I realised that I was tired and winding down by dinner time in the evening. Once Miss 11 is tucked into bed, getting creative is hard and overwhelming. I feel so much more energised and focused in the mornings, and I wasn't using the window at all to be creatively productive. I realised that getting creative shortly after waking is something I had to try. And I hit the jackpot; it's early days, but it's fantastic, productive, and much better than walking for setting me up. I walk a bit later now after school drop.

This is how it generally works (most of the time!)

5 am - get out of bed, make coffee

5.10 am - take my coffee out into the courtyard with a blanket and ponder in silence

5.30 am - get my paint palette out and start painting

If I don't feel like spending time on a larger painting, I do some quick acrylic florals on wood rounds or wooden boxes (launching on my website soon); these are easy to start and finish, so a great mini painting project for the morning).

6.30 / 7.00 am - start getting the house moving with breakfast and homework etc

It's simple, but I feel like I am getting more creative time and being more productive. I prioritise this time, which is easily lost to the household without focus and intention. Anyone who feels more energised in the morning could do this to spend an hour a day creating.

How about you? Are you going to give it a try?
