5 simple ways to add beautiful layers of colour and texture to your home

CONNECT HEART & HOME ///

Contrary to common belief, adding layers of prettiness to your home does not have to mean creating clutter. Gone are the days of hoarding collectibles and complete sets of anything. Sorry but not sorry younger mum, who collected Royal Doulton ladies, Lilliput Lane cottages and scary looking traditional nutcrackers only made in Germany. And that's just to name a few of the many many weird expensive obsessions. Now that's clutter!!

This week I want to explore 5 simple ways that you can add glorious layers of colour, texture and pretty things to your home whilst still leaving 'white space' and room to breathe.

1. Choose wall art sizes that promote variety.

Some small pieces curated on a large wall, mixed with larger pieces snug in their space on the wall to create WOW factor and maximum impact.

Mix and match sizes with balance in mind and leave open wall space here and there. Leaning art against a wall or on a cupboard shelf is also an option. You don't have to hang everything on the wall to display it beautifully!

2. Choose textiles with colour palettes that you LOVE.

If you don't LOVE it, it doesn't belong in your home. Personally I love vibrant colourful rainbow colour pieces, such as the many handmade blankets I have dotted around the place. But if your taste is more subtle then opt for restricted color palettes with 2 or 3 colours or pastel shades. Ultimately if you have a big blank sofa in the middle of your room jazz it up with some cosy cushions or a throw that you love. These patterns and colours will spend time with you everyday so make sure you enjoy their company.

3. Choose some neutrals

Neutral walls, window furnishings and large furniture pieces allow you to add the colour elsewhere in the room. This helps to create balance and make the room less overwhelming. In some ways neutrals are a blessing in any home as they effortlessly offset your favourite colourful things with grace and harmony. Neutral does not me no texture however. Choose interesting neutrals such as pretty delicate linen window curtains or a rustic unfinished table.

4. Use living plants and flowers

Refresh a boring plain functional dining table with a vase of fresh cut flowers. Or take the time to invest and care for indoor plants suitable to the light in your space. Research and trial and error are the secrets to choosing the right plants. If you plant isn't happy it will let you know and once you've watered it your best bet is to move it to a new location to see if that makes it feel better. You will never get bored from the energy and texture that living plants and flowers bring to your home.

5. Every ornament should hold a special place in your heart.

Don't display ornaments that don't serve a purpose. You must either LOVE it's aesthetic appeal or it must have a sentimental meaning and heartfelt value to you. Less is more. Odd bits and pieces will add a quirky personality to your home that is unique to you. Celebrate it.
